The Trailblazers dorms

Usually around this time of the day, Cynthia is making rounds around the dorms and peeking over the shoulders of her teammates to see what they're doing. Usually, she's talking loudly enough to someone that she can be heard several rooms over. Usually, she's bugging someone to do something or go somewhere with her.

Today, however, Cynthia is quiet. She's hunched over something in the main room; it's difficult to tell what it is, but it looks like it might be a piece of paper or maybe a notebook. She could be holding a pencil or a pen, too. She doesn't respond to any nearby conversation, even if her name is said. It seems like she's unusually focused on the item in front of her. It's up to you to solve this mystery, brave Trailblazer.

Wandering around LA

The sun is shining, the birds are singing, and Cynthia is out for a stroll in the city. It's such a beautiful day, so how could she not take the opportunity to enjoy a little bit of it? She's full of energy and ready to explore stores and streets she hasn't seen before. She might do a little bit of shopping, too; it depends on what she finds. Today is a great day for anything and everything.

Throughout the day, Cynthia will jump to help anyone she perceives to be in trouble. She might not do a very good job of helping, but it's the thought that counts, right? Despite not currently being proficient as a superhero, Cynthia will try her best to stop any crime she sees. She's happy to strike up conversation with anyone in her environment who looks friendly...probably also people who don't look friendly. It's just such a nice day.

At the end of the day, she'll sit down on the grass at a nearby park and enjoy the feeling of the breeze in her hair. You might find her rolling around in the grass on occasion, blissfully unaware of any prying eyes.

Cynthia only looks up and notices Karkat when he sits down right across from her with his nasty "food."

"Oh, hey, Karkat!" she says, as if he just entered the room. She twirls her pencil between her fingers, but her other arm is sort of unintentionally laid across her notebook. There's some of what looks like a drawing visible, along with curly, pretty handwriting. "I think I'm gonna have to pass on a movie this time...I'm a little busy right now. Maybe later, though!"

His brow furrows in suspicion and he leans over more blatantly. "How come, what are you doing?"

"Well," she says, drawing out the word for a couple of moments, "I'm designing outfits for my new fairy princess character!" She picks up and turns around the notebook so that Karkat can see. There are several drawings on the page. Some look a bit too elaborate to be actually worn, much like many avatar arrangements on internet pet sites. Some are sort of difficult to understand.

Karkat's brow furrows even more. His lip curls in sort of disapproving confusion. He tilts his head a little to try to take in what he is being shown. Then he tilts his head a lot.

"... What the fuck is going on with any of these?"

Hoping for a positive reception, Cynthia watches Karkat's face with a smile. She's worked so hard on these complicated princess outfits, and surely others will see that.

When he speaks, her expression turns from hopeful and optimistic to just plain offended. "Hey!" she says, ticked off that he would insult her designs like that. "It's completely obvious what's going on in all of these; you're just not looking at them intensely enough!" The intensity of his gaze is definitely the problem.

Karkat leans forward a little. He's upset her, which he does regret, but at the same time – these are kind of dumb and he refuses to pretend that they're not.

"No it isn't." He jabs a claw at one of the designs. "What the hell is happening here?"

After giving him a bit of a look, she turns the notebook back around and inspects the design he indicated. "Well," she says, after a pause, "she's supposed to have ethereal ribbons floating around her arms, kind of like a shawl but...floating and ethereal! Her dress has several layers and sleeves, each a different fall color. Her headpiece is sort of..." She pauses again, this time clearly working to decipher her own drawing. "Sort of like a bunch of leaves! But also like a crown...kinda. And, of course, she's holding her Staff of Undying Radiance, which lets her punish evil-doers once she's proven them guilty!"

"That sounds kind of inefficient for punishing evildoers, how much does she have to proved it before it lets her punish them?" He leans forward a little, looking unconvinced. "And what kind of chump makes a crown with leaves."

"Wow, excuse me!" Cynthia wrinkles her nose at him. "A fairy princess makes a crown with leaves, duh. Do you think she has gold in the middle of her giant tree home or something? And she has to catch them in the middle of a scheme, just like any good detective!"

"Well why the fuck not, if we're imagining fairies are exist then why not magic tree gold as well," says Karkat, rolling his eyes.

Cynthia huffs. As reluctant as she is to admit it out loud, what he's saying does make some sense. Magic tree gold likely has no problem existing in the same world as fairies. "Okay, magic tree gold can exist! Maybe she has some crowns that are made of magic tree gold too. She probably has a lot of crowns. Happy now?"

"I guess," Karkat concedes. "How come she's a princess and a detective? Can't she just punish whatever the fuck she wants."

The question sort of baffles Cynthia. "Well...why not? If she's both, she can do both the investigating and the punishing! If she were just a detective who punished culprits she uncovered, she'd be a vigilante, and, like, that's cool too, but she probably wouldn't have a ton of fancy outfits."

"Well she could," says Karkat, clearly the voice of reason here, "if she was good enough at her job to be really well paid. But if she's a princess she doesn't need to have evidence to punish anyone."

"What kind of princess uses royal power to just punish people without any evidence?" asks Cynthia. Why she would want to include monarchial abuses of power in her story is beyond her understanding. "That doesn't seem fair – she's gotta investigate to find the real culprit, or else someone innocent might get punished!"

"A regular princess," he replies, as if this is the most obvious thing in the world. "Or I guess if she has some kind of human morality hangup she'd hire other people for doing it, because she'd have better things to do, like governing whatever planet she's the princess of."

"Wow," Cynthia says, and leaves it at that for a couple moments. "...That'd kind of cowardly, like, aside from way uncool and mean. Someone like that shouldn't be a princess – I mean, someone who just punishes people whenever she wants."
