It's a pleasant evening at Ernest E. Debs Regional Park, just a couple miles from downtown LA, which can be seen through the haze. Late March means spring is just arriving in LA and the trees are just starting to bud. Unfortunately, the grass is still kind of dead and dry.

The barbecue and picnic area isn't too busy, though the park does have the usual assortment of joggers, dog walkers, and cyclists. There are some balloons tied to picnic tables, and strung between two trees is a very homemade "SUPER BBQ" banner, courtesy of Hulkling and Starbreaker. There's still glitter glue on Milly's apartment floor. There's another posterboard with the rules written on it in big bold sharpie letters nearby, just in case anyone forgets:

• Don't be a jerk!!!
• Keep your weapons holstered please.
• Do not trash the park!
• ABSOLUTELY NO FIGHTING
• Anyone caught fighting will be asked to leave!
• Really don't be a jerk!

Well, Jon guesses they're having a real conversation now. He nods.

"If you need anything, we can get it for you," he says noncommittally. 'Condor gives us money for food and supplies."

He peers at the burgers thoughtfully, and then says, "Yeah, I'll take one now, humans always cook meat way too much."

He puts like five gross processed cheese slices on the burger, and more relish than any reasonable person needs.

"So how long do you think before Team Magma or whatever worthless asshole supervillain crew got ahead of themselves this week shows up to steal your ketchups," he asks, looking around at the assembled hero folk.

Sometimes meeting as many people as possible means just running up to the first person who catches his eye, so it was pretty much inevitable that Ben would end up noticing the guy in all the purple and the cape before too long.

(He seems kind of familiar actually, but Ben shuts down that train of thought as soon as it comes to mind - he feels like intentionally figuring out someone else's secret identity must be breaching some kind of Superhero Code or something.)

He rushes up to the guy (he's kind of been rushing everywhere for the past couple minutes, this form is good for that), skidding to a stop on XLR8's weird foot-wheel-things. "Hey, what's up!"

It's shaped like a discus and that at least give him a clue at how to throw it properly. He frowns and raises the frisbee, moving it around experimentally before tossing it to her.

It does that thing when it catches the wind the wrong way and sort of flops to the ground inelegantly. Orion stands there staring at it, not especially surprised.

...well then.

Di just stared at it for a moment, pursing her lips to keep from giggling before she jogged back, picking it up.

She stood by Orion's side demonstrating a proper hold.

"Try like this. When you hold you want to make sure that your thumb is on top, your index finger is on the rim, and the rest are on the underside."

Adoption's probably a thing. It's not really a big deal to her, and more trouble than it's worth to ask anyway.

"That is actually the most adorable thing I've ever heard." Her smile turns to a very serious expression. Except for that quirked-up corner. "Never tell anybody I said that. I have a reputation to keep up as a stoic warrior who doesn't think puppies are cute."

Even more sharply dressed than the creepy-looking white dude nearby (come on, Starscream, let's be real, Knock Out is totally the best dressed here, don't even argue) is another man wearing a disgruntled expression almost as well as he does his outfit. Arms crossed over his chest, Knock Out surveys the superhero crowd with a disdainful look, lip curled and all. How did Sollux badger him into this indeed. What a waste of such a nice day.

"Surely we have better things to do than...this," Knock Out says haughtily, rolling his eyes. Like taking a nice, luxurious drive in the pleasant spring weather, for one.

While the older men he is with are dressed classily, Sollux is wearing a ROBE AND WIZARD HAT and is completely unashamed about it. For one, he has a sense of humor, and for another, the hat actually covers his horns, and with latex face hood he's wearing beneath it, it's not actually completely obvious who he is. And, honestly, the costume isn't any worse than what some of the actual superheroes go out in, let's be real here.

"Man you guys are sticking out something nasty, did you know that?" he says in Alternian. "This was supposed to be hero costumes only."

And here is, quite possibly, the only out-of-place looking guy who actually seems pretty content with all this. He also looks dressed more accurately for a picnic in simple, comfortable clothes, but that's just coincidence. He'd be wearing this white tank top anywhere he went, regardless of location or temperature.

"It's not that bad," he says cheerfully, but most of his attention is diverted by trying to keep this bulldog puppy at least in the same area as them. It seems to have other ideas, and pays him almost no attention at all — it seems happy enough to keep sniffing at Sollux though, so he's not too worried. "And anyway, these are costumes already."

So good enough, right? Point: missed.

He watches the way she's holding it and then nods. It makes sense - he needs to get the velocity under control, is all.

"Perhaps you should show me," he says, and takes several steps away from her to be ready to catch it.

"What Breakdown said," Knock Out says, a touch impatiently, also totally missing the point. "These avatars don't look anything like us. It's not as though we're going to be identified."

He eyes the puppy, frowning slightly, but it doesn't look like it's about to run off just yet. "What I want to know is why you insisted that we come. It's not as though we're going to eat any of this..." He gestures at the barbecue spread. "...This food. And it's not as though you need to be chaperoned."

[nitrodamus]

Sollux squats so he can ruffle the dog's ears. He's kind of glad you can't see his face right now because his expression would be a little bit telling.

"Oh my god, it's like you guys have never gathered information in your entire life. It's a fucking superhero party - there are tons of people here who know all kinds of stuff. Whatever kind of shit you've been scouting for, maybe you could learn something."

Di moves back as well and at a fair distance she takes a throwing stance, pausing for a moment so Orion could see her, before she throws it. It drifts towards Orion at an almost leisurely pace, heading straight for his chest.

Jon laughs.

"What about my reputation? I was the one who asked to keep them."

[starscheme]

"The troll does have a point," Starscream says reluctantly to no one in particular. He still can't stop talking about Sollux as if he isn't even present. "Its likely that the Autobots may be around here for similar reasons. We need to remain vigilant."

All very serious points from someone who doesn't actually give two lugnuts about doing actual work right now.

"Well, I'd hope so," Knock Out says in exasperation. "I mean, otherwise, what would be the point?"

It's clear that he considers gathering information from the local natives about as useful for reconnaissance as sitting around watching a pair of dogs sniff each others' asses. Mostly he's bitter. With his recent revelation that he can no longer harm any humans without some serious repercussion, the idea of spending the afternoon surrounded by skinjobs only sours him further. He glances around haughtily, his expression darkens.

"Starscream, you ran into one of the Autobots' avatars, didn't you? What did it look like?"

"Oh, don't worry," Finnick says dryly, "I've more than taken advantage of their generosity."

He has this nice new outfit to show for that.

[starscheme]

Starscream looks taken aback. "What did it... I don't know, human? Female???" He honestly has no idea how to answer that question. "What am I supposed to be some sort of expert on identifying different humans? What does it matter anyway, we can just scan for their avatars."

[nitrodamus]

On the grass, with the dog, Sollux just cracks up laughing at Starscream's reaction.

[buffthis]

"Well, you're the only one who's seen her," Knock Out snaps at Starscream, huffing, and then he looks down at Sollux, lip curling. None of this is doing anything for his foul mood. "Will you shut up?"

[nitrodamus]

Sollux doesn't shut up.

"You're right dude, you've been organic for like a half hour and I can't even remember what you look like anymore. Is it grey? Purple? Maybe sort of blue? Do you have legs? You have legs, right?"

[starscheme]

"You stay out of this!" Starscream snaps before turning back to Knock Out. "What do you expect me to say!? It had black hair? All humans look the same!" he hisses, taking his angry embarrassment from Sollux's reaction out on Knock Out.

[nitrodamus]

Why not keep talking? He's going to keep talking.

"Who knows man, I mean you have wings and stuff so maybe you don't need legs. I just don't understand you car robots. I don't understand your ways."

[buffedthat]

Breakdown has wandered over onto the grass too, trying to figure out how to get the dog's attention to play with it too. Who knew a dog needed something that had an actual scent, huh?

"It's not that hard," comes his mumbled addition. "You just gotta look a little closer at humans."

Starscream looks like he sincerely would like to punch Sollux right now. He shifts his glare to Breakdown though. "Oh? Show me then. Go on. Describe Knock Out's avatar."
