The Trailblazers dorms

Usually around this time of the day, Cynthia is making rounds around the dorms and peeking over the shoulders of her teammates to see what they're doing. Usually, she's talking loudly enough to someone that she can be heard several rooms over. Usually, she's bugging someone to do something or go somewhere with her.

Today, however, Cynthia is quiet. She's hunched over something in the main room; it's difficult to tell what it is, but it looks like it might be a piece of paper or maybe a notebook. She could be holding a pencil or a pen, too. She doesn't respond to any nearby conversation, even if her name is said. It seems like she's unusually focused on the item in front of her. It's up to you to solve this mystery, brave Trailblazer.


Wandering around LA

The sun is shining, the birds are singing, and Cynthia is out for a stroll in the city. It's such a beautiful day, so how could she not take the opportunity to enjoy a little bit of it? She's full of energy and ready to explore stores and streets she hasn't seen before. She might do a little bit of shopping, too; it depends on what she finds. Today is a great day for anything and everything.

Throughout the day, Cynthia will jump to help anyone she perceives to be in trouble. She might not do a very good job of helping, but it's the thought that counts, right? Despite not currently being proficient as a superhero, Cynthia will try her best to stop any crime she sees. She's happy to strike up conversation with anyone in her environment who looks friendly...probably also people who don't look friendly. It's just such a nice day.

At the end of the day, she'll sit down on the grass at a nearby park and enjoy the feeling of the breeze in her hair. You might find her rolling around in the grass on occasion, blissfully unaware of any prying eyes.

"I...guess so? Uh...thanks," Cynthia answers, still sort of shocked that this man is so nonchalant about ripping his shirt off in the middle of a cafe. She's already caused a big enough scene by spilling coffee on him; she doesn't need him to draw even more attention to the situation. Thanks a lot, mystery shirt man.

She tries to focus on the task at hand, which, in this case, is cleaning this up. She kneels down on the floor and starts mopping up the coffee with the dry paper towels she dropped. Hopefully, the man will stop standing there attempting to look roguish and actually help her.

This is absolutely not her idea of a fun day out.

"Yeah, that sounds fine." He agrees.

"Are you seriously thinking about writing a whole story for this thing?" The thought of putting that much effort into some passing doodle was beyond him.

If there's something Cynthia and Eusine have in common, it's that he doesn't consider mopping things up fun.

Which is why he helps her the same way a little kid might help: with a lot of energy, but not a lot of effort. He grabs paper towels by the armful, throwing them somewhat haphazardly at wherever the biggest puddles are and hastily mopping them up... which mostly results in the liquid getting spread out even more.

It's a bit like watching a very inefficient whirlwind.

"So! Do you come here often?" he asks with the same kind of wild energy he's putting into failing at cleaning things up. Does this guy even have an off switch? Probably not.

"Nah, I'm pretty much done with school forever. I'm interning at the Times now!" She pats the spot on her bag where she's pretty sure her camera ended up. "Pictures and stuff, quick interviews if I'm lucky. What about you? I mean, superhero-ing obviously, but you clearly can't just be doing that a hundred percent of the time."

Cynthia almost tells him to do a better job of actually helping, but she did just spill coffee on him, so maybe she shouldn't scold him. He could be suffering from some sort of burn-related aftereffects, though she doubts he's any different in regular circumstances. What a weird guy.

"Nah, I just found this place like a week ago," she says, a little less cheery than usual. "What about you?" She looks up at his face, and it hits her that he is kind of familiar in a vague way. She has no idea where she might have seen him, or someone like him. It's bugging her. Before he can answer, or perhaps as he is beginning to answer, she cuts in: "Hey – do I know you from somewhere?"

"Well, maybe not writing a story, but I think drawing characters when you know who they are is sooo much more fun than just drawing designs with...no personality or anything!" Cynthia doubts she'd be able to write a full story right now – even though it would be awesome – but she casually slides that idea into her mental file cabinet for later.

Cynthia shrugs. Her life isn't very exciting...yet. "Not too much! I spend a lot of time hanging out with my teammates and other friends, watching movies, training...oh, and I like to go on a pegasus appreciation forum. I know that sounds nerdy, but it's really fun!" Cynthia has been appreciating pegasi online for many years now; it is truly a refined art. "Interning at the Times sounds super cool, though, oh my gosh!"

"Alright, well, I'll just leave you to that." He wasn't really interested in drawing anything, and Cynthia could do that plenty well without him. He slipped of the chair, pulling his headphone back on.

"Aw, don't you want to help me design awesome dragon-fighting outfits and weapons for her?" Cynthia asks, a bit louder than usual because of Metabee's headphones. Even though she's certain that his aesthetic is oceans apart from hers, coming up with ideas with someone else is always more fun.

"Pegasi? Seriously?" She laughs, not particularly mocking, but definitely amused.

"And yeah, it's pretty great! I mean I'm not allowed to do anything super-important yet, but I'm getting there!"

Metabee turned back, still walking away slowly backwards. His hands went up in a stopping motion, shaking his head.

"Nah, I think you got that covered. I'll catch 'ya later and you can tell me all about it."
She probably would anyway, knowing how crazy Cynthia was over her fantasy stuff.

Nessa drops her backpack at her feet and sits next to Cynthia, eyes wide with interest. She takes the paper and peers at it.

"Ohh! He's so cute!" she purrs, pointing at his little hat. "I really like this hat! Do you have designs for the Fairy Princess too? I don't remember you telling me about this!"

Cynthia shrugs. It's his loss; whatever he's going to go do, it's nowhere near as exciting as fairy princesses. "Alright, I guess! See you later, dude." She turns back to her notebook and begins drawing and scribbling down notes again.

Cynthia's eyes gleam at the positive feedback. Nessa is the master of cute drawings and cute designs, so to have her approval is a big deal for Cynthia. "Thanks so much!" she exclaims. "These are new characters that I've been working on all today, so I haven't had the chance to go around showing everyone yet. Lemme show you the fairy princess!"

She grabs a notebook that's tucked next to her, and then flips through the pages until she gets to the page she's looking for. She turns the notebook so that Nessa can see the fairy princess' design. The fairy princess is clothed in a colorful, leafy-but-flowing princess dress, and she has fairy wings too. "She's supposed to have alternate outfits too – like a fairy detective outfit – but I haven't designed those yet."

He'd started to open his mouth... but his reaction to being cut off isn't, strangely, to be horribly offended. Instead, he looks stupidly elated.

"You might!" he exclaims, beaming from ear to ear. "I have a gig at a venue not too far from here - they have my posters plastered all over the place! Maybe you saw one of them!"

Actually it's kind of a shitty club and they have a grand total of one poster hidden under a dozen other pictures, but like that's enough to detract Eusine from his dreams of greatness.

Cynthia barely has to think about it. "No, that's not it...I've never been to a club." It's not that she dislikes dancing or fun lights or cool music; she is just not quite old enough for clubs. She's been pouting about that particular facet of new adulthood for months.

The comment about a gig piques her interest, though.

"What kind of gig do you have?" she asks. She's about cleaned up all of the spilled coffee on the floor, so she has a bunch of wet and crumpled paper towels in her hands. At least she's close to putting this embarrassing incident behind her forever. "Are you a musician or something?" Honestly, it wouldn't surprise her. This guy doesn't seem like your regular old office worker.

Cleaning up? What cleaning up? There's a conversation to be had (about himself, too!) and you simply can't chat properly when your hands are full of dirty paper towels. This is why he grabs them straight out of the girl's hand -not violently, but definitely with a lot of energy to spare- before dumping them straight into the trash.

He was closer to the garbage can anyway.

"Not a musician, no." He theatrically dusts his hands off. "I deal in awe and wonder, mysteries and illusions! I am...!"

His voice goes down one octave. Dramatically.

"... a magician."

Cynthia leans in a little as the man explains. Awe and wonder? Mysteries and illusions? It sounds exciting, that's for sure.

"Oh," she says, unimpressed, when he finally gets to saying what he does for a living. "...Do you pull rabbits out of hats and stuff, or is it, like, real magic?" She very much doubts that he does any real magic – I mean, just look at this guy. There's no way he's summoning ancient legendary weapons and calling down lightning.

"Well she could," says Karkat, clearly the voice of reason here, "if she was good enough at her job to be really well paid. But if she's a princess she doesn't need to have evidence to punish anyone."

"Yeah, seriously!" Cynthia says, crossing her arms. She's got a bit of a pout on her face. This is an important and serious business. "Pegasi are way awesome."

As she finishes talking, they make it to the cafe. She stops at the entrance. "D'you wanna get anything?" Miko's previous pegasus-related transgression seems to be forgotten.

"What kind of princess uses royal power to just punish people without any evidence?" asks Cynthia. Why she would want to include monarchial abuses of power in her story is beyond her understanding. "That doesn't seem fair – she's gotta investigate to find the real culprit, or else someone innocent might get punished!"

"A regular princess," he replies, as if this is the most obvious thing in the world. "Or I guess if she has some kind of human morality hangup she'd hire other people for doing it, because she'd have better things to do, like governing whatever planet she's the princess of."

Miko shrugs, holding her hands up defensively. Wow this girl is really intense about flying horses.

She checks her pocket as they reach the cafe - yep, she's got like seven bucks in there. "Sure, why not. You planning to get anything?"

WOW EXCUSE YOU MAGIC IS THE COOLEST THING

There's something about the way she disappointedly says "oh" that makes him deflate a little bit. "Oh". He's the best magician of his generation (possibly even one of the best magicians EVER!), and all he gets is a measly "oh"???

"You make it sound so boring." he says, quite ruffled. "Magic is so much more than pulling rabbits out of hats! Sorcery may be impressive... but prestidigitation is the realest kind of magic! Magic... from the heart!"

And that's coming from a wizard, so you know this completely unbiased opinion is true. Not that wizardry is any less real but. Listen, he's trying to make a point here.

Cynthia is skeptical at best. "Prestidigitation...?" She's never heard that word before, but that doesn't really change anything. She wipes up the last bit of the coffee, then stands up again. "Can you create fire with your hands, or move a mountain, or...summon a mythical beast to be your noble steed? That's the cool kind of magic."
